The Bible Series
Published January 18, 2019

The statistics are staggering:

  • More than 168,000 Bibles are sold or given away in the United States every day.
  • Twenty million Bibles are sold each year in the United States - more than double the amount that was sold annually in the 1950s.
  • Ninety-two percent of Americans own at least one Bible. Two-thirds of owners, regardless of religious affiliation, say that the Bible holds the meaning of life.
  • But the average American Christian owns nine Bibles and wants to purchase more. For this reason, the Bible is actually excluded from book bestsellers’ lists because it would always be on top.
  • YouVersion, a Bible app for mobile devices, has been downloaded on more than 350 million devices and in every country around the world. It has been in the top 100 Free App category for years.

The Bible has never had a wider audience. But is anyone reading it?

There is a widespread assumption that followers of Jesus should read the Bible. But there remains a mountain of barriers that hinder us from doing that well. Sometimes, we don’t know where to start. Sometimes, we don’t know how to read ancient literature and connect it to our everyday lives. Sometimes, it records tough, even grotesque, stories that offend our sensibilities. Sometimes, it bores us, confuses us, or stifles us. And so, many people give up. They put it on a shelf and live with a constant, low-level guilt about not reading what they should read (and love!).

It’s time that we strip away all that guilt and get honest. It’s time for us to recapture this strange and compelling book called the Bible. It’s time to learn how to interact with it, how to enjoy it, and how to live it out in this unique time. It’s time to return to our Rabbi Jesus and follow his lead with this ancient library we call the Bible.

So for the next couple of months, we want to explore what the Bible is, where it came from and what great and wonderful ways it can shape our faith in 2019. My hope is that we will read its pages together, shake our heads together, discover new truths together, and ultimately fall afresh in love with its God. Will you join our church family in this practice? Will you grab the “Good Book” and re-discover the gospel good it generates in our lives?

I'd love to have you join us this Sunday as we begin a new series simply titled, "The Bible."
